The production of zinc oxide primarily involves two major thermal chemical routes: the Indirect (French) Process and the Direct (American) Process. While both result in the same chemical compound, the choice of method often depends on the required purity level and the available raw materials.
- The Indirect (French) Process
This is the most prevalent method for creating high-purity zinc oxide. Metallic zinc is placed in a crucible and heated until it vaporizes at temperatures around 907°C. The resulting zinc vapor then reacts with oxygen in the air. This exothermic reaction creates fine particles of zinc oxide, which are subsequently cooled and collected.
- The Direct (American) Process
This method utilizes zinc ores or various zinciferous by-products. The raw material is mixed with carbon (often anthracite coal) and heated in a furnace. The carbon reduces the zinc ore into zinc vapor, which is then oxidized by controlled air combustion to form zinc oxide.
- Wet Chemical Processing
For specialized applications requiring ultra-fine or nano-sized particles, wet chemical methods such as precipitation are employed. This involves dissolving zinc salts in aqueous solutions and using a precipitating agent, followed by washing, drying, and calcination.
